A 16- or 17-year-old may marry only with in-person consent of a parent or legal guardian (with documents proving the relationship, identity and birth date) and written authorization from a juvenile court judge or commissioner, who must find the marriage voluntary and in the minor's best interest. The court must require premarital counseling (unless not reasonably available), may impose conditions such as continuing school, cannot authorize the marriage if the parties' ages differ by more than four years, and must wait at least 72 hours after the petition is filed.
