Frequently asked questions

Do landlord-tenant laws differ by state?
Yes, a lot. Deposit limits, deposit return deadlines, eviction notice periods, entry rules and repair remedies are set by each state, and some cities add their own rules. Pick your state below for the rules that apply to you.
Where can I get free legal help as a tenant?
Start with your local legal aid organization and your state court's self-help center; each state page links official resources. Some cities, including New York City and San Francisco, guarantee a lawyer to many tenants facing eviction.
Is federal law relevant to renting?
Yes. The federal Fair Housing Act bans discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status and disability, and many states and cities add protected classes. Some federally assisted housing also has its own notice and grievance rules.
