Unemployment Appeal Letter in Alabama
A letter appealing a denial of unemployment benefits. Appeal deadlines are short and strict in every state — file before the deadline shown below, even if you are still gathering documents, and keep claiming benefits each week while the appeal is pending if your state allows it.
What Alabama law says
| Appealing a denial | You must appeal in writing within 15 calendar days of the mailing date of the determination (if the deadline falls on a weekend or state holiday, it moves to the next business day). File online at workforce.alabama.gov or mail, fax or hand-deliver it to the Hearings and Appeals Division. A telephone hearing is scheduled. Keep filing weekly certifications while your appeal is pending. A further appeal goes to the three-member Board of Appeals. |
|---|---|
| If you were fired | You can be disqualified if you were fired for work-related misconduct. The state looks at how serious the misconduct was, whether you were warned, and whether steps were taken to correct the behavior before you were fired. If you are discharged, your employer must show you were terminated for a work-connected cause. Being fired for a criminal act can also remove that employer's wages from your claim. |
| If you quit | If you quit, you can be disqualified unless you had good cause connected to your work. Personal reasons, such as lack of transportation or moving farther from work, are not work-connected causes. If you quit, the burden is on you to show you left for a good work-connected reason. |
