Room Rental Agreement in Illinois
For renting a room in a home, including your own home. Some states treat a renter in the owner's home (a lodger) differently when ending the arrangement — see your state's household rules.
What Illinois law says
| Tenancy at will | For a tenancy for any term less than one year (other than week to week) where the tenant holds over without special agreement, the landlord may end it with 30 days' written notice; week-to-week tenancies need 7 days' written notice, and year-to-year tenancies 60 days' written notice before the end of the year. Once a tenancy is ended by such notice, no further demand is needed before filing an eviction case. Source: 735 ILCS 5/9-205, 9-207, 9-208 |
