Rent Receipt in Maine

A simple rent receipt to give a tenant for each payment — especially cash. Some states require a receipt for cash rent; check your state below.

What Maine law says

Rent receiptsRequired for any rent or security-deposit payment made fully or partly in cash, delivered at the time the cash is accepted (a separate receipt for each installment, and separate receipts for rent and deposit paid together). Each receipt must show: date of payment; amount paid; name of the person for whom payment is made; period covered; whether it is for rent or security deposit; signature of the person receiving payment; and that person's printed name. A rent card kept by the tenant with this information also satisfies the law.
Does not apply to a building with no more than 5 units, one of which the landlord occupies.
