Rental Application in Maine
A rental application that collects what landlords commonly ask for. Follow your state's limits on application fees and fair-housing rules: ask every applicant the same questions.
What Maine law says
| Application / screening fees | Application fees and fees to review or approve an application are banned. The one exception: the landlord may charge the actual cost of only one of these: a background check, a credit check or another screening process. The landlord must first tell the applicant that the law requires giving them a complete copy of the information obtained, and must then provide that copy. No more than one screening fee per applicant in any 12-month period. No portable-screening-report statute was found. |

| Statewide ban on refusing Section 8 / source of income | Yes. The Maine Human Rights Act makes it unlawful to refuse to rent to, or impose different tenancy terms on, someone who receives federal, state or local public assistance, including housing subsidies such as vouchers, primarily because they receive it. The statute says 'primarily because of the individual's status as recipient.' It covers public assistance only, not every lawful source of income. Source: 5 M.R.S. § 4581-A(4) |
