Unemployment Appeal Letter in Maryland

A letter appealing a denial of unemployment benefits. Appeal deadlines are short and strict in every state — file before the deadline shown below, even if you are still gathering documents, and keep claiming benefits each week while the appeal is pending if your state allows it.

What Maryland law says

Appealing a denialYou normally have 15 days after the mailing date of a benefit determination to appeal; a hearing examiner may extend this for good cause. Appeal in BEACON, by fax to (410) 225-9781, by email to UILowerAppeals.Labor@maryland.gov, or by mail to the Lower Appeals Division. Include your name, the last four digits of your Social Security number, the determination date and why you disagree. Keep filing weekly certifications while you wait.
If you were firedMaryland has three levels of misconduct. Ordinary misconduct leads to a disqualification of 10 to 15 weeks, set by how serious it was. Gross misconduct (deliberate and willful disregard of the standards an employer can rightfully expect, or repeated rule violations showing a regular and wanton disregard of your obligations) disqualifies you until you are rehired and earn at least 25 times your weekly benefit amount. Aggravated misconduct is treated separately and more strictly.
If you quitQuitting without good cause disqualifies you. Good cause must be directly connected to the conditions of employment or the employer's actions; it also covers leaving because of domestic violence that endangers you or a close family member, with documentation. If you quit for a "valid circumstance" (for example, a necessitous or compelling reason with no reasonable alternative, such as a documented health reason, or following a military spouse on a mandatory transfer), the disqualification is 5 to 10 weeks. Without a valid circumstance, you are disqualified until you are reemployed and earn at least 15 times your weekly benefit amount. Quitting to become self-employed, to follow a spouse (other than the military transfer rule) or to attend school never counts as good cause.
