Rent Receipt in Massachusetts
A simple rent receipt to give a tenant for each payment — especially cash. Some states require a receipt for cash rent; check your state below.
What Massachusetts law says
| Rent receipts | No general receipt rule for monthly rent, but receipts are required for advance payments: (1) last month's rent paid in advance — a receipt at the time of payment showing the amount, date received, that it is last month's rent, who received it (and the landlord's name if an agent), a description of the premises, and a statement that the tenant is entitled to interest; (2) a security deposit — a signed receipt at the time of payment showing the amount, who received it (and the landlord's name if an agent), the date, and a description of the premises; and (3) within 30 days, a second receipt showing the bank name and location, account number and amount where the deposit is held. Failure to give the bank-account receipt entitles the tenant to immediate return of the security deposit. |
