Vehicle Bill of Sale in Montana

A record of a private car, truck or motorcycle sale between a seller and a buyer. Many states transfer ownership through the signed title itself and use a bill of sale as proof of the price and date. Check your state's rules below: some require a specific DMV form or a notary.

What Montana law says

Selling a vehicle: bill of sale and titleThe seller transfers ownership by signing the transfer on the certificate of title and giving it to the buyer (or by authorizing an electronic title transfer on a state form). The buyer's name and address must be written on the title. Montana titles do not need notarization as of October 2025. The buyer has 40 days from the sale to apply for a title and register the vehicle at the county treasurer's office; a $10 late penalty applies after that. Montana's bill of sale form is MV24, which the Motor Vehicle Division lists among forms that may be needed.
