Unemployment Appeal Letter in Rhode Island

A letter appealing a denial of unemployment benefits. Appeal deadlines are short and strict in every state — file before the deadline shown below, even if you are still gathering documents, and keep claiming benefits each week while the appeal is pending if your state allows it.

What Rhode Island law says

Appealing a denialYou must appeal in writing within 15 days after the determination is mailed. The appeal goes to the Board of Review, which may extend the deadline for good cause.
If you were firedIf you are discharged, or suspended without pay, for proved misconduct connected with your work, you get no benefits until you earn at least 8 times your weekly benefit rate in new covered work. Misconduct means deliberate conduct in willful disregard of the employer's interest, or knowingly breaking a reasonable rule or policy that the employer enforces uniformly. It does not include a violation that results from incompetence. Being required to retire under a retirement plan is never treated as misconduct.
If you quitIf you quit without good cause, you get no benefits until you earn at least 8 times your weekly benefit rate in new covered work. The law says good cause includes sexual harassment, following a spouse whose job moved too far to commute, and caring for an immediate family member with an illness or disability that lasts longer than the employer will grant leave. Following a spouse who is retiring does not count as good cause.
