Vehicle Bill of Sale in Rhode Island

A record of a private car, truck or motorcycle sale between a seller and a buyer. Many states transfer ownership through the signed title itself and use a bill of sale as proof of the price and date. Check your state's rules below: some require a specific DMV form or a notary.

What Rhode Island law says

Selling a vehicle: bill of sale and titleWhen an owner sells a titled vehicle, the owner must sign the assignment and warranty of title on the certificate (or as the Division of Motor Vehicles prescribes) when the vehicle is delivered, and get the title to the buyer or the DMV. The buyer must promptly sign the application for a new certificate of title and send it with the title to the DMV. Between the parties, the transfer is not effective until these steps are completed.
