Rent Receipt in South Carolina

A simple rent receipt to give a tenant for each payment — especially cash. Some states require a receipt for cash rent; check your state below.

What South Carolina law says

Rent receiptsGenerally no. South Carolina's Residential Landlord and Tenant Act has no general rent-receipt requirement. The one exception: in an eviction case where the tenant raises defenses or counterclaims and pays rent as it comes due while the case is pending, the landlord must give a written receipt for each payment, unless the tenant pays by check.
Getting a written receipt for any cash payment is still a good practice.
