South Dakota Security Deposit Itemization Letter Template

What a South Dakota security deposit itemization letter must include under South Dakota law, and a fill-in draft that follows those rules.

Use the official form if there is one

What South Dakota law requires

Within 21 days after the tenancy ends and the landlord receives the tenant's mailing address or delivery instructions, the landlord must return the deposit or furnish a written statement showing the specific reason for withholding any portion. Deductions limited to unpaid rent, other funds due under an agreement, and restoring the premises (ordinary wear and tear excepted). On the tenant's request, an itemized accounting must be provided within 45 days after termination. Noncompliance forfeits the right to withhold; bad-faith retention or failure to provide the statement/accounting allows punitive damages up to $200.

Fill-in draft

Replace every [bracketed] item. If your state or city requires specific wording, a specific form, or a translated version, that requirement controls over this draft. Courts dismiss eviction cases over defective notices — if anything is unclear, talk to a lawyer.
