Rent Receipt in Texas

A simple rent receipt to give a tenant for each payment — especially cash. Some states require a receipt for cash rent; check your state below.

What Texas law says

Rent receiptsCash payments only. A landlord must accept a tenant's timely cash rent unless a written lease requires payment by check, money order or another traceable or negotiable instrument. A landlord who receives cash rent must give the tenant a written receipt and record the payment date and amount in a record book the landlord keeps. The statute does not list other required receipt contents. A tenant (or a governmental entity or civic association acting for the tenant) may sue to stop a violation; a prevailing tenant may recover the greater of one month's rent or $500 for each violation, plus court costs and reasonable attorney's fees.
