Debt Validation Letter in Vermont

Ask a debt collector to prove a debt. Under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (15 U.S.C. § 1692g), if you dispute in writing within the validation period, the collector must stop collecting until it sends verification. Send it by certified mail and keep a copy.

What Vermont law says

Can a payment restart the clock? An acknowledgment or promise to pay affects the limitations defense only if it is in writing and signed by the debtor. The limitations chapter does not take away the effect of a payment of principal or interest.
