Sublease Agreement in Vermont

For a tenant renting their unit, or part of it, to a subtenant. Most leases require the landlord's written consent first — get it, and attach it.

What Vermont law says

Subletting rulesA landlord may condition or prohibit subleasing in a written rental agreement and may require the tenant to give written notice of the name and contact information of any sublessee. If the written agreement prohibits subleasing, the landlord or tenant may bring an ejectment action against a person occupying the unit without right or permission. With no written rental agreement, the tenant must give the landlord written notice of the name and contact information of any sublessee. The statute sets no reasonableness standard for consent.
