Rent Receipt in Virginia

A simple rent receipt to give a tenant for each payment — especially cash. Some states require a receipt for cash rent; check your state below.

What Virginia law says

Rent receiptsCash and money order payments. The landlord must give the tenant a written receipt whenever rent is paid in cash or by money order. The statute does not list required receipt contents. Landlords must also accept rent and security deposits by check and money order, and may not charge a fee to process rent or other payments unless they offer a fee-free payment method (and any card or electronic payment fee may not exceed the landlord's actual third-party cost).
Landlords with four or fewer rental units (or up to a 10 percent interest in four or fewer) need not accept debit or credit cards.
