Vehicle Bill of Sale in Virginia
A record of a private car, truck or motorcycle sale between a seller and a buyer. Many states transfer ownership through the signed title itself and use a bill of sale as proof of the price and date. Check your state's rules below: some require a specific DMV form or a notary.
What Virginia law says
| Selling a vehicle: bill of sale and title | The buyer needs the Virginia title signed over by the seller, with the buyer's section completed, plus an Application for Title and Registration (Form VSA 17A) and proof of address (Form DMV 177). Proof of the price can be a buyer's order, a bill of sale signed by both parties, the price the seller writes on the title, or a Vehicle Price Certification (Form SUT 1). The seller records the mileage on the title. The DMV page does not require notarization for this kind of sale. The buyer pays a $15 title fee plus sales and use tax. A Virginia-titled vehicle can also be transferred online through DMV electronic titling. |
