Where to ask for a free lawyer or attorney
| Pro bono and legal aid programs | The Volunteer Lawyers Project of the Nebraska State Bar Association helps low-income Nebraskans through case placement, virtual and in-person clinics, courthouse self-help desks and online services. It does not accept applicants directly: "We do not accept or respond to calls, emails, or written requests for help." Start with Legal Aid of Nebraska, Statewide AccessLine 1.877.250.2016 (Monday/Wednesday 8:30-11:30 a.m., Tuesday/Thursday 1:00-3:00 p.m. Central) or ElderAccessLine 1.800.527.7249 (age 60+). If it cannot help, you can apply to the Virtual Self Help Center, attend a local clinic, or submit a question through Nebraska Free Legal Answers. Legal Aid's online application was temporarily unavailable and it takes no walk-ins. VLP home page: https://www.nevlp.org/ ; Legal Aid of Nebraska: https://legalaidofnebraska.org/call-for-help.html |

| Who qualifies | The Volunteer Lawyers Project helps only low-income applicants and may not be able to serve everyone who applies; income eligibility is generally based on federal poverty income guidelines, and other factors also matter. It gives no dollar figure and does not serve incarcerated persons. Legal Aid of Nebraska "serves people with limited resources" and asks about household income and assets, citizenship and your legal issue. | Cases covered | "Most services through the Volunteer Lawyers Project are limited scope advice and drafting only." It does not handle criminal matters, appeals or all civil cases. Legal Aid of Nebraska does not take criminal defense (its Clean Slate Project can help with sealing records and setting aside convictions), Board of Mental Health inquiries, immigration, medical malpractice, personal injury or workers' compensation. Other free or low-cost help
| Free legal questions online | Nebraska Free Legal Answers lets you submit a written question to an attorney without a referral, according to the Volunteer Lawyers Project. The page gives no further detail. |
|---|---|
| Free legal aid | Legal Aid of Nebraska provides information, referrals, advice, self-help services and representation to qualifying low-income people with civil legal issues, with seven offices serving all 93 counties. There are no walk-ins: call the Statewide AccessLine at 1-877-250-2016 (Monday/Wednesday 8:30-11:30 am, Tuesday/Thursday 1:00-3:00 pm, Central Time) or apply online. Seniors 60+ can use the ElderAccessLine at 1-800-527-7249. The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) lists Legal Aid of Nebraska as the LSC-funded grantee in the state. LSC grantee list: https://www.lsc.gov/about-lsc/our-grantees |
| Lawyer referral service | The Nebraska State Bar Association's Find-A-Lawyer website lets the public look for a lawyer. Attorneys listed there charge $50 or less for the first 30 minutes of consultation, according to the site. The site says it is not a directory of NSBA members; for a full list of licensed Nebraska attorneys it points to the Nebraska Supreme Court Attorney Services Division website. |
