Who qualifies

If you were firedYou are disqualified if you were discharged for misconduct: a deliberate act or omission that is a material breach of your job duties, showing willful or wanton disregard of the employer's interests (ordinary carelessness is not enough unless it is repeated to the point of equal culpability). Examples in the law include falsifying a job application, knowingly violating a reasonable and uniformly enforced rule, intentional damage to property, using or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs at work in violation of policy, endangering others' safety, excessive unexcused tardiness or absences, theft, and losing a required license through your own fault. The disqualification lasts until you have earned 10 times your weekly benefit amount in insured work. For gross misconduct (an indictable offense connected with work, with a conviction or signed admission), all wage credits earned before the discharge are canceled.
If you quitYou are disqualified if you quit without good cause attributable to your employer, until you have earned 10 times your weekly benefit amount in insured work. You are not disqualified if, for example, you quit to accept other or better work that you then performed, because a military spouse was relocated, to care for an injured or ill immediate family member (and then offered to return), because of illness, injury or pregnancy on a doctor's advice (with notice and an offer to return once recovered), or instead of bumping a less senior coworker.
Layoffs and reduced hoursYou may be eligible if you are unemployed or working reduced hours through no fault of your own. A lack of work is not treated as being fired. If you work reduced hours, report all gross earnings each week; partial benefits are figured under the earnings rule.
Earnings needed to qualifyYour total base period wages must be at least 1.25 times the wages in your highest base period quarter. For claims effective July 5, 2026 or later, you also need at least $2,210 in one quarter and at least $1,110 in a different quarter (for claims from July 6, 2025: $2,140 and $1,070).
Self-employed, 1099 and gig workersIf you are self-employed or get a 1099 for work, you do not report those earnings on your weekly claim; self-employment income is not counted as wages and does not reduce your benefits. You must still be able, available and actively seeking suitable work, and you can be disqualified as unavailable if self-employment keeps you from accepting suitable work.
