Child supportSupport is set under the Iowa Child Support Guidelines (Iowa Court Rules chapter 9, current version effective January 1, 2026), which are based on both parents' combined adjusted net monthly incomes, with each parent responsible in proportion to income. A noncustodial parent with more than 127 court-ordered overnights a year receives an extraordinary visitation credit (15% to 25%), and a separate method applies to equally shared (joint) physical care. When child support endsChild support covers minor children and must include support for a child between 18 and 19 who is engaged full time in completing high school graduation or equivalency requirements in a way reasonably expected to finish before age 19. It may also include support for a child of any age who is dependent on the parents because of a physical or mental disability. Separately, a court may order a postsecondary education subsidy for a child between 18 and 22 who is a full-time student in good faith at a college, university or community college, regularly attends career and technical training, or has been accepted for admission and is waiting for the next term to start.
Changing a child support orderA court may modify child support when there is a substantial change in circumstances, considering factors such as changes in a party's employment, income or resources, medical expenses, number or needs of dependents, health, residence, remarriage, and the child's needs. A substantial change automatically exists when the current order differs by 10% or more from the amount due under the current guidelines, or when a parent has a health benefit plan available and the order lacks medical support provisions. Child Support Services also reviews support awards at either parent's request or on its own and starts modification proceedings when the criteria are met.
If child support isn't paidBy statute, Child Support Services helps enforce support orders through court or administrative proceedings, including setting off support debts against state and federal income tax refunds and other federal payments, and withholding from unemployment compensation. When the delinquency exceeds $2,500, the U.S. Secretary of State may revoke, restrict, limit or refuse to issue a passport. The agency may also contract with private collection agencies for difficult cases.
