Sublease Agreement in District of Columbia
For a tenant renting their unit, or part of it, to a subtenant. Most leases require the landlord's written consent first — get it, and attach it.
What District of Columbia law says
| Subletting rules | A housing provider may, in its sole and absolute discretion, prohibit subletting or assignment, in part or in full, but only if the prohibition is in the lease. If the lease allows subletting subject to the provider's reasonable consent, or is silent, the provider may condition consent on the proposed subtenant meeting its reasonable rental qualification guidelines, which it must give the tenant on request. When a provider lets a tenant find a replacement tenant, assign or sublet, any replacement fee may not exceed the permitted application fee. Re-verified 2026-10-27. |
