Jury Duty Excuse Letter in Hawaii

A short letter asking the court to excuse you from jury duty or postpone it. Follow the instructions on your summons first, because courts handle these requests differently, and keep following the summons until the court answers.

What Hawaii law says

Who can be excused from jury dutyAccording to the Hawai'i Judiciary, you may claim an exemption from jury service if you are 80 or older, a judge, a practicing physician or dentist, active-duty military deployed out of state, police, fire or emergency medical personnel, an elected official asked to serve during the legislative session, or if you live more than 70 miles from the court that sent the summons. A person breastfeeding a child 2 or younger can also be exempt, and a person with a disability may be disqualified with a physician's or physician assistant's certificate. These exemptions are claimed on the juror questionnaire; anyone else, such as a caregiver with no substitute or a person with a medical condition, must ask the court in writing at least 2 weeks before the appearance date. A summoned juror may also ask once per summons to postpone service.
Jury duty pay and your jobThe Hawai'i Judiciary says HRS § 612-25 bars employers from firing employees because of jury duty, and a fired employee may sue to recover lost wages and be reinstated. The Judiciary also says no Hawai'i law requires employers to pay employees during jury duty. Jurors are paid $50 for each day of service plus round-trip mileage at 33 cents per mile; a juror who is excused at his or her own request may get only mileage.
