Resignation Letter in Iowa
A simple resignation letter you can adapt for immediate resignation or a longer notice period. Your state's final-paycheck and PTO-payout rules are shown below.
What Iowa law says
| Final paycheck if you quit | By the next regularly scheduled payday, the same as for firing. |
|---|---|
| Unused vacation / PTO payout | Only if the employer has a contract, policy or practice of paying vacation to departing employees. Employers must follow their own policies on sick time, vacation and holidays. When vacation accrues pro rata under a policy or agreement, it is calculated by the part of the year actually worked. |
| At-will employment and exceptions | Iowa is generally an at-will state: either side may end employment at any time, for any or no reason, and notice is generally not required. Exceptions include firings based on a protected characteristic (sex, race, color, national origin, religion, age, pregnancy or disability), for certain whistleblower actions such as filing an OSHA complaint, in breach of an employment contract, or for trying to comply with government regulations such as restaurant health codes.
