Sublease Agreement in Louisiana
For a tenant renting their unit, or part of it, to a subtenant. Most leases require the landlord's written consent first — get it, and attach it.
What Louisiana law says
| Subletting rules | The tenant may sublease and either party may assign or encumber its rights unless the lease expressly prohibits it. In a lease of immovable property, a clause prohibiting any one of subleasing, assigning or encumbering is deemed to prohibit the others unless a contrary intent is expressed; otherwise, such restrictions are strictly construed against the landlord. A subtenant or assignee gets no greater rights than the tenant to use the property. Article 2713 was amended and article 2713.1 added by Acts 2026, No. 240. The statute does not set a reasonableness standard for refusing consent when the lease requires consent. Subtenant rights: https://legis.la.gov/Legis/Law.aspx?d=1483422. Source: La.
