Rent Receipt in New Jersey

A simple rent receipt to give a tenant for each payment — especially cash. Some states require a receipt for cash rent; check your state below.

What New Jersey law says

Rent receiptsCash payments only. A landlord must give a printed or emailed receipt for each cash payment of any amount due under a residential lease, renewal or extension. The receipt must accurately show the amount, the purpose of the payment, when it was received, the printed or typed names of both landlord and tenant, and who accepted the payment. A landlord's violation is a valid defense in a nonpayment eviction case for the months in which it occurred, and carries penalties that increase for repeat violations. Landlords also may not require tenants to pay rent by electronic funds transfer.
Does not apply to rental premises with no more than two units, owner-occupied premises with no more than three units, or hotels, motels and guest houses for transient or seasonal guests. Applies to leases, renewals and extensions signed on or after January 13, 2020.
