Warranty Deed in North Carolina

A warranty deed transfers real estate with the seller's promise that the title is good. Before you record it, check your state's signing and recording rules below and your county recorder's formatting rules (margins, preparer and return-address blocks, transfer-tax forms) — recorders reject deeds that miss them.

What North Carolina law says

Signing and recording a deedBefore a deed can be registered, it must be acknowledged by the person who signed it, or the signature proved under oath by a witness as the law prescribes. An unregistered deed does not pass title against lien creditors or buyers for value until it is registered in the county where the land lies. The transferor must pay the state excise tax on the conveyance, $1 for each $500 (or fraction) of consideration or value, to the register of deeds before the deed is recorded.
