Vehicle Bill of Sale in Tennessee

A record of a private car, truck or motorcycle sale between a seller and a buyer. Many states transfer ownership through the signed title itself and use a bill of sale as proof of the price and date. Check your state's rules below: some require a specific DMV form or a notary.

What Tennessee law says

Selling a vehicle: bill of sale and titleTo sell a vehicle, the owner signs the assignment and warranty of title on the certificate of title, lists any liens, and gives the title to the buyer with the vehicle; all joint owners must sign unless the names are joined by 'or' or the title is in one spouse's name. A separate bill of sale is used only when a lender holds the title: the seller then gives the buyer a signed bill of sale naming the lender, and the seller's signature must be notarized. The title section itself sets no notary requirement for the assignment on the title and no number of days for the buyer to apply for a new title.
