Who qualifies

If you were firedIf you were discharged for misconduct connected with your work, you are disqualified for the week of discharge and the 14 weeks after it. If the misconduct was gross, flagrant and willful, or unlawful, you are totally disqualified from benefits based on wages earned before the discharge. Misconduct involving intoxication at work cancels all wage credits from that employer. Courts describe misconduct as wanton and willful disregard of the employer's interests, deliberate rule violations, or negligence showing culpability.
If you quitQuitting without good cause is a common reason for disqualification. The disqualification lasts until you return to insured work, earn at least four times your weekly benefit amount, and are separated from your most recent employer under non-disqualifying conditions.
The agency FAQ does not list what counts as good cause.
Layoffs and reduced hoursFile as soon as your job ends or your hours are reduced, and file weekly claims for every week you are unemployed or working reduced hours. If your employer confirms a return date within 16 weeks (112 days) of your layoff, you are exempt from the online resume and reemployment activity requirements; your employer can ask to extend this.
Earnings needed to qualifyFor 2026, you must have at least $5,440 in base period wages from insured employers, including at least $1,850 in one quarter and $800 in another quarter. The amount is adjusted every year. For a back-to-back claim, you must also have worked in insured employment since your prior claim and earned at least six times the previous weekly benefit amount.
Self-employed, 1099 and gig workersServices performed for wages are employment unless it is shown that the worker (a) is free from control or direction, (b) works outside the usual course or places of the business, and (c) is customarily engaged in an independent trade or business. Nebraska law excludes from employment service by a marketplace network (app-based platform) contractor when the contractor and platform agree in writing that the contractor is independent, the platform does not set required hours, does not bar outside work or other platforms, and cannot end the contract for refusing a specific request.
